    Falling Trees

With all the rain and now snow that we have had lately, has anyone had to deal with trees falling around you? So far we haven't but there are several huge trees up behind the house that I'm watching closely.

    Cane Poles

Anybody here ever fish with a cane pole? When I was a kid that was the fishing rod of choice. No fancy stuff for me. Just a cane pole, a string, a hook and a cork was all that was needed. It made for some great lazy summer afternoons and some good suppers.

    Solar Water Heater

I remember my dad making a solar water heater when I was a kid. He used the tank of an old water heater and mounted it on the roof. He ran the lines, installed the spigots and we had warm water for outside showers. Dad was a real handy man.

    Deer too close

Driving to work yesterday, I saw a deer that had been hit on a 5 lane highway. This is a well-populated area. I just wonder what drove the deer to be in such a populated place.

    Home Grown Eggs - Finally

I've been looking for someone who has their own chickens so I can become an egg customer. I've looked for over a year now and finally found someone local. You sure can tell the difference in taste.

    Apples

I stopped an bought my 50lb. bag of deer apples this afternoon but I don't use them for the deer. I work them up by freezing them and making apple butter which I can for later use. You should smell the house when that apple butter is cooking. Do you have your apples yet?

    Local Honey

Tell me if this is true or not. Eating a little locally produced honey every day will help prevent allergies? This may be an old wives tale but if anyone has any experience with this, I'm off to find some local honey. :)

    Dried Herbs

Due to all the rain we've had this year, my herb garden has done very well. I'm in the process of drying a bunch of them to store for the winter and to give away. Have you ever thought about drying herbs to use when the grid goes down? It sure would add some flavor to our meals.

    Hot Peppers

Due to all the rain we've had this year my pepper plants are bearing twice the usual amount. I have jalapenos and cayennes running out of my ears. I know I'm not the only ones with this challenge. What do you do with all those peppers?

    Disappearing Roads

We've had so much rain in our area, that some of the roads are beginning to collapse. Most are in and around culverts that go under the road. Many roads are closed and more rain is expected at the end of the week. If you're in an area like this, please be careful. Stay home if possible.

    Sun Dried Tomatoes

I love sun dried tomatoes but have never tried to do this myself. Anyone out there ever done it? If so, I would love some pointers. How do you keep the insects off and how long does it take?

    It's Raining Again

Enough already! It's raining again. Instead of living in the South I feel like I'm in a tropical rain forest. My garden has been drowned out, the grass is knee high and it keeps raining. One of the communities close by even had a micro burst the other day that did major damage to homes and...

    Jerky

Some of the old western movies show strips of beef hung over a pole and being dried out in the sun. I've always used my dehydrator for this or the oven. Have any of you tried it in the sun? How would you keep the flies off?

    Sink Holes

Too much rain!!! One of our local grocery stores has a huge sink hole in it's parking lot. Several years ago, a sink hole swallowed a Corvette and a restaurant in a small town close by. Seen any sink holes lately?

    Tropical Storm Andrea

Andrea is now moving up the east coast and inland. Here on the coast of NC, we didn't get nearly what they were predicting. Rain and wind, but not bad. Anyone else in the path of the first tropical storm of the season?

    Sinking Neighborhood

Have you read about all the sinking houses lately? The latest story is a whole neighborhood in NC that was built on top of a landfill. I thought there were ordinances and laws against such a thing. I guess that builder has left the country by now. I can't imagine what these people are going...

    MRE's

Do any of you have MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat) stockpiled? I can remember eating one several years ago it wasn't that bad. High in calories and a little salty, but not too bad. I'm thinking about putting some of these with my stash.

    Sassafras Tree

There's a volunteer sassafras tree coming up in my front yard. I almost cut it down till I remembered my grandmother used to dig up the roots and make sassafras tea. There's many health benefits to drinking sassafras tea including the prevention of liver cancer. I think I'll let it grow.:)
